I have been thinking about my stance on AI. In many ways it is identical to the lament by anyone that sees something they love being taken over by automation. The automobile killed the blacksmith career, and so many others. The diesel locomotive killed the career of the train fireman.
I guess now it is time for creative people to lose their dreams of writing something special. Business has to take the most cost-effective path. Once AI is affordable and easy to use, I am convinced the human writers will be replaced; just as the artisans of the past were replaced by mass production. I would hope that AI will not be able to create the quality and the emotion that human writers can, but that may not be true.
However, the loss of human creativity is not the only issue. AI will be an effective weapon to completely destroy the truth. AI writing can create any story about anyone, and AI imagery can make anyone appear to be doing anything. Even if an expert can determine that the pretrial of the person is fake, it doesn’t erase the idea from the public’s mind.
The biggest fear is that this is the first time in human history that humanity is creating something that has the potential to replace humanity itself. My fear doesn’t just come from watching and reading science fiction. It is from reading the step-by-step progress being made. All of the progress is pointed to cognition for AI entities. I truly believe that would be a disaster for humanity.
